Learn about our Student Engagement Coordinator, Jala Taylor-Pickett, and what she enjoys about Trotter, Ann Arbor, and more!
What are you studying and what is your year?
I am a junior, studying Business Administration with a concentration in Technology and a minor in UX Design.
What are your favorite places and things to do on campus or in Ann Arbor?
I love to try the small shops that Ann Arbor has—there are so many passion places here, and getting to go to them and see how different businesses are run with such beautiful pieces, items, and delicious food is the most fun.
When did you begin working at Trotter and what is your role?
I started working at Trotter in the Fall of my sophomore year. I am a Student Engagement Coordinator, where we maintain Trotter's hospitality, and handle event logistics, program facilitation, and front desk operations.
Do you have a favorite event or experience from working here?
I enjoy F.A.M. Fridays and Soul Food Sundays. As an African American woman on campus, having space to enjoy community and fellowship is important to me. Trotter events are perfect spaces for me to breathe a little, love my community, and enjoy some good food!
What do you enjoy about Trotter?
I love that Trotter is like Wakanda—it's a space that's hidden in plain sight. You wouldn't guess what type of experiences we have here. I can name countless times when the ideas I've heard here resonated with me so deeply, or the showcase of our community on campus was highlighted—it feels like home. I met my best friends at Trotter, my favorite mentors and staff on campus, and people I wouldn't have crossed paths with otherwise. I enjoy Trotter because it's here for me and for people who look like me.
What would you say to students who haven't visited Trotter?
Come see the space for yourself, attend some of the programming, and observe the genuine care of the building's staff.
What student org(s) are you involved in?
I am the VP of Marketing for the Black Business Undergraduate Society, Public Relations Chair for Sister 2 Sister, and Co-President of Tech Plus. I enjoy them because they each fill different parts of my identities and passions and allow me spaces to grow professionally, socially, and academically.
