Learn more about Team Lead Neil Nakkash and his favorite local spots, his responsibilities at Trotter and his favorite Trotter memory.

What are you studying and what is your year?

I’m a fourth year student at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, where my concentration is in Middle Eastern Policy Studies.

What are your favorite places/things to do on campus or in Ann Arbor?

As an avid reader—or at least someone who tries to be an avid reader—my favorite place in Ann Arbor is TeaHaus, a quiet tea shop with a no-technology policy. The ambiance of the place is very homey, and it lies in my favorite part of the city, the Kerrytown/downtown area.

When did you begin working at Trotter?

I was hired as a Building Manager at the end of my sophomore year during the summer of 2022. I started working as a Team Lead in the fall of 2023.

What is your role and responsibilities?

In addition to the responsibilities of all building managers, as a Team Lead, I closely work with a team of other student staff to assist in training, answer work-related questions, and ultimately support them in my capacity. As a student, I understand the importance of achieving a balance between work, school and all other aspects of life. Through consistently meeting with other student staff and providing guidance when appropriate, I aim to support fellow staff members in prioritizing their well-being and education while fulfilling their responsibilities.

My role at TMC goes beyond ensuring the day-to-day functions of the facility. Our work has a greater purpose, as the building stands as one of the few spaces at the University of Michigan where students of diverse and often marginalized backgrounds are able to engage in community building and intercultural engagement.

Do you have a favorite event or experience from working here?

Early in the winter 2024 semester, we had a staff meeting in which we were exposed to self-defense training. While the training was informative, it stands as my favorite experience because it also offered a unique opportunity for bonding between student staff and program staff.

What do you enjoy about Trotter?

My favorite thing about Trotter is how easy it is to meet new people. I started coming to Trotter during my first year on campus. I can’t even count the number of people I’ve met at the building because of all of its programs and events I’ve attended since then.

What would you say to students who haven't visited Trotter?

If you’re looking for a place to meet great people and engage with other cultures, simply come in!

However, when you come into this building, please take the time to learn its history. At its entrance, an informational poster stands. It speaks on the history of Black student activism at the University of Michigan and how TMC stands here today due to the decades-long work of Black student activists and their allies.
